Learn to Live Lightly on the Earth with Resilient Neighborhoods

The Earth’s climate is changing. Extreme climate events like drought, record breaking heat, flooding, and widespread wildfires are all things we are experiencing in Marin. Globally, the past eight years are on track to be the warmest on record. These changes are linked to rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere, affecting millions of people and costing billions of dollars.

The good news is that progress is being made as the world shifts to a clean energy future. But we must increase our commitment to reducing polluting emissions, and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in order to stay on course and adapt to the ‘new normal.’

“The global climate fight will be won or lost in this crucial decade – on our watch. So let’s fight together – and let’s win. For the 8 billion members of our human family – and for generations to come.

– António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, November 7, 2022

But, what can you do? Many Marin residents are concerned about climate change but don’t know what actions to take to make a difference. That’s where Resilient Neighborhoods comes in! Resilient Neighborhoods has helped over 800 Marin households reduce over 11 million pounds of CO2 emissions since it began its climate action workshops in 2012. The organization was founded by long-time Marin resident and environmental leader Tamra Peters, and with the help of staff and volunteers has developed a robust program to make it easier for people in Marin to take action on climate.

The program is fun and effective because it’s done in teams of households, each going on a ‘low-carbon’ diet to reduce 5,000 pounds of polluting emissions in 10 weeks. Five, free, facilitated team meetings take place online every other week and cover actions on shopping, waste, water, home energy, transportation, emergency preparedness and building a more resilient community.

The teams are made up of people from all over Marin County. Sign up yourself and invite a friend, neighbor, coworker, club member or someone from your place of worship. All are welcome on the team and we all are needed to make a difference NOW.

The next free online workshops start in January on Jan. 12 and Jan 18.
