Sausalito Bans Gas-Powered Landscaping Equipment

In an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Sausalito bans gas-powered leaf blowers lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, weed trimmers, weed whackers, scissor lifts, chainsaws and pole-mounted trimmers. The ordinance was enacted on the recommendation of the City’s Sustainability Commission. Gas-powered landscape equipment has also been a common source of noise complaints by residents.

A 2011 study by Edmunds showed that a two-stroke gasoline-powered leaf blower created more pollution than a 6,200-pound Ford F-150 SVT Raptor pickup truck. The editor of the study stated that “hydrocarbon emissions from a half-hour of yard work with the two-stroke leaf blower are about the same as a 3,900-mile drive from Texas to Alaska in a Raptor.”
